Jamaica is the third largest English-speaking population in the Americas, and has the advantage of a neutral accent as well as close proximity and affinity to North America and its culture. There are four major post-secondary institutions with an average of 6,700 graduates per year. The three largest majors are in the business, accounting, and technology fields. This contributes to an affordable set of highly educated and skilled candidates.
In addition to the large workforce selection, Jamaica has the advantage of being located within a 4 hour flight radius of many major cities, with frequent flights to numerous airports worldwide. It also has the benefit of hosting the #1 transshipment port in the region.
According to The Jamaica Gleaner, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are major focus areas for the Development Bank of Jamaica. Over US$23 million has been invested in both the ICT and BPO sectors. This substantial investment has been made by both private and government organizations in Jamaica due to the increase in demand based on Jamaica’s excellent reputation for positive communication with customers. In addition, Jamaicans are well known for their strong negotiation skills, which leads to fewer errors and more first contact resolution.
Many major companies have successfully outsourced to Jamaica and have been extremely satisfied. They found the Jamaican work ethic to be far superior to other near and offshore locations. These companies include Netflix, AT&T, Target, Capital One, and General Motors. The BPO and ICT outsourcing sector is the fastest growing employment sector in the country. The government recognizes it as the best source for economic growth on the island, and has taken numerous steps to encourage investment. Two redundant fiber networks have been laid around the island with a connection to Miami. Companies in the industry enjoy “free zone” status; with tax and duty exemptions, allowing for a beneficial relationship to both partners.
